Muralitharan's 800-Wicket Milestone

It was one of those tense days during 2005 tri-series in Sri Lanka where India and West Indies were participating along with the host country, when a bomb blast in Colombo threatened to bring the series to a sudden halt. The mistrust between the two leading communities of Sri Lanka was at its peak and anyone speaking the Tamil language was seen as a possible threat.

Amidst all this tension, there was still one Tamilian who was being mobbed by the Colombo fans for his autograph. No prizes for guessing right. It was the only Tamilian face of the Lankan team Muttiah Muralitharan who was practising with his teammates at this Colombo ground, unfazed by all the surrounding activities.

After a two-hour practice session at the Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters, Murali went straight to the adjoining
Tamil Union Sports Club for a stroll. The gloomy atmosphere there suddenly came alive and few young Tamil boys gathered around Murali for his expert comments.

Times may have changed now — no more bomb blasts or spectre of death hanging in the air, but not unlike on a previous occasion, tension continued to prevail in entire Sri Lanka on Thursday. It was a fear tinged with love and hope, of delicious anticipation for the country’s most admired Tamil citizen who was stuck on a 799-wicket mark.

The entire nation was glued to the television sets, watching Muralitharan trying all his variations against two of the Indian tailenders, Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. Ishant, in particular, looked absolutely determined not to give his wicket to this smiling assassin. A run-out of VVS Laxman, minutes ago, already caused many a heart attack to Murali fans. There were speculations galore.

Will he end up his career like the way Sir Don Bradman did? Will he also be struck on this 799-mark? There were numerous questions crossing the minds of Murali’s diehard fans, but the determination of his fellow bowlers to not go for wickets was one comforting factor. When a sharp Murali delivery kissed the outer edge of the left-handed Ojha to reach the 800-wicket milestone, celebrations broke out and a magnificent and controversial Test career came to a dramatic close.

Even in his last Test, Murali took eight wickets to set up an easy victory for his home team. This has always been the hallmark of Murali’s career. Instead of just being content with his individual performance, Murali concentrated his efforts more on taking Sri Lankan cricket to this pinnacle. He joined the team when the Lankans were used to being called the ‘minnows of Test cricket’ and has now retired after 17 years of a long illustrious inning where he saw them reaching the acme of success.

Is he the greatest ever?

The way Test cricket is now been played around the world, it is almost unthinkable that anyone would get close to the 800-wicket mark ever again in the history of cricket. But more important than this mark, is the way Murali has played the game.

Although the speedster Chaminda Vaas gave him valuable support during his career but for most of the time, especially in Tests, Muralitharan spearheaded the Lankan attack entirely on his own. In fact with his retirement, batsmen all around would be spared the nerve-rattling rumours that Murali has developed another magical delivery!

Murali’s biggest asset was his ability to turn the ball off the wicket. His unorthodox bowling style allowed him to impart the spin like no other in the world.

The accusations of “chucking” that have dogged Murali would be hard to scotch even in the future. But he has always tried to prove his detractors wrong with his match-winning performances. His supporters have never got into the cricketing technicalities. His right arm has a congenital defect which means that it appears to bend more than it actually does when he bowls, was all the explanation that was ever offered.

More than once he has been filmed bowling in the nets with a brace strapped to his arm that allows for virtually no elbow flex. So, why blame just Murali for this?

In fact, in 2004 Champions Trophy, an ICC video analysis found that more than 99 per cent bowlers have been flexing their elbows to some extent. The permission of 15 degree elbow bend would also be attributed to the controversy generated after Murali’s action. However, one thing is certain that replacing Muralitharan, who was not just a great bowler but was also an effective late-order batsman and a safe catcher in the outfield, will just be difficult for Sri Lanka.

The person who looked likely to replace him till a few month’s back was another mystery man Ajantha Mendis. But the sudden decline in his form has put a question mark to his own place in the team.

Warne or Murali?

It is difficult to choose between these two magicians. Warne was definitely a better tactician but Murali was infectious. However, both these great spinners had one thing in common... hunger for wickets. Though Shane Warne would be remembered for his clean bowling action and off-field activities, Murali will be remembered for his sheer grit on the field and his good conduct off it.

In fact, these two taught the younger generation the art of taking wickets. They were never content to bide their time and wait for errors from the batsmen. Rather, they always tried, lured and attacked them with different variations.

The golden era has definitely come to an end. But the hope to see this great bowler in action, during the shorter formats, remains. He is likely to bow out of One-day Internationals after next year’s World Cup, and may also continue to be part of the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

Certainly, Murali’s retirement, after Warne and Anil Kumble, may well mean there will be one less reason to watch Test cricket, which is wilting under the pressure of Twenty20 format.

Over to cricket’s GenerationNext now to carry on the good work done by these legends!

Atlast India done it

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni heaped praised on his team-mates for their all-round show in the 81-run crushing of Sri Lanka to clinch Asia Cup title and said it would boost their morale ahead of the Test series against the same opponents next month.

"It is good to win back the Asia Cup after 15 years. Both batsmen and bowlers performed to their best. It was a team effort and an ideal performance before the Test series," said Dhoni.

"There was a bit of pressure on us before the start of the big game. We have to perform well and that's what we did," Dhoni mentioned after the match.
"The batsmen did well to score a competitive total and then bowlers restricted the Sri Lankans way before the winning mark. We wanted Dilshan to get out early as we know, if he stays for 3-4 overs, he will score 30-40 score runs and take the game away from your reach. But Zaheer and Nehra produced great opening spells," Dhoni added. On his performance behind the stumps, accounting for five victims including a stumping, which was a record for the Asia Cup, Dhoni said all credit goes to his bowlers for bowling wicket-taking deliveries.

"Thanks to bowlers. Hope to get more from then in the future ahead," he said.
Dhoni commended the efforts of Zaheer Khan (2 for 36) and Ashish Nehra (4 for 40) for bowling India to a resounding win. "I knew what my fast bowlers were capable of doing on this wicket. Both Ashish and Zaheer bowled brilliantly. With the ball doing a bit off the seam, it was always going to be difficult for their batsmen to score runs off them," said an elated Dhoni.

However, he hoped his seamers would be more consistent in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. "This was one of the best performances by our fast bowlers in recent times. But they need to be more consistent ahead," said Dhoni. "I wouldn't say that we are playing to our best but we are constantly improving. We showed that on the field today. Our bowlers, especially the fast bowlers, did well and made use of the conditions as there was something for them under lights." "Even our batsmen did well though I wish after getting good starts we have converted them into big ones," said the jubilant Indian captain. He said there was a need to rest key players as India needed them to be fit for the 2011 World Cup on the Asian sub-continent. "Some of us senior players took the break. We came back fresh for this tournament and did well. We all are working on our fitness and it is an aspect that may not show immediately on the field." "We are aiming to field our best players for the World Cup and we hope that they are fit during that period, even if we need to rest key players," said Dhoni. He said it was satisfying to get five dismissals and hoped to continue to make himself count more behind the sticks. Talking about the youngsters, he said they need some more games under their belt.

"They are learning from their mistakes. But they need to play more games to gain experience."
A disappointed Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said that they were outplayed by India in every department and the match went out of their hands in the first 15 overs of their run chase.

"First 15 overs did us in. We lost four top-order batsmen which was not the great way to start the proceedings. 268 was a chaseable target as India had earlier done so against Pakistan, but Indian bowlers produced attacking line and length to knock us out."
"We could not build good partnerships after that. We are now looking forward to perform well at the three-match Test series," Sangakkara said. "Also we weren't at the best in our fielding letting go boundaries when runs need to be saved," rued Sangakkara. "We came back in the last twelve overs by conceding 60 runs. Though we could say that we gave India 15 to 20 runs more than we should have, but in the end it did not matter as we were bowled out for 187," said Sangakkara.

Man-of-the-match Dinesh Karthik, who struck a fighting half-century (66), said that he proved selectors' decision right to call him up in place of injured Virender Sehwag. "I am happy with my performance. I was called in place of Sehwag and I performed my bit. Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli supported me well to build on a good innings. Hope to continue with good show ahead," he said.

Maoists derail train

Two trains collided after a blast hit a passenger train and flung it into the path of a speeding goods train in Jhargram area of West Bengal on Friday, killing at least 25 people, government officials said.

One local government official said the toll could go up to "anywhere around 50-60" because many passengers were trapped inside mangled coaches.

The area is known to be a stronghold of Maoist rebels. A railway spokesman said sabotage was suspected, but the involvement of the Maoists has yet to be confirmed.

"At this stage I can confirm 25 deaths," Manoj Kumar, a railway official, told Reuters. "The toll will be much higher.

"We can give a final figure only after rescue operations are complete. We have to cut open the compartments and bring out bodies."

A reporter of the Telegraph newspaper described a scene of chaos and panic at the site.

"People are crying. Rescuers are struggling to save the survivors and get the bodies out," Naresh Jana told Reuters.

"I can see body parts hanging out of the compartments and under the wheels. I can hear people, women, crying for help from inside the affected coaches."

The incident comes days after a passenger airliner crashed in Mangalore, killing 158 people.

The passenger train was going to Mumbai from Kolkata.

"The blast derailed 13 coaches of the Gyaneshwari Express. These coaches then fell on the other track where a goods train rammed into some of them," Soumitra Majumdar, a railway spokesman told Reuters.

Majumdar said sabotage was suspected because the passenger train had been hit by a blast.

The Maoist rebels, who often attack police, government buildings and infrastructure such as railway stations, have in recent months stepped up attacks in response to a government security offensive to clear them out of their jungle bases.

The rebels blew up a bus in Chhattisgarh this month, killing 35 people, about a month after 76 police were killed in another attack.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has described the insurgency as India's biggest internal security challenge.

The decades-old movement is now present in a third of the country and while they have made few inroads into cities, they have spread into rural pockets of up to 28 states and hurt potential business worth billions of dollars.

The Indian Cricket Board will issue show cause notices tomorrow to six players, including senior members Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, for their alleged involvement in a pub brawl in St Lucia after India's humiliating exit from Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Besides Yuvraj and Zaheer, show cause notice would be served to Ashish Nehra, Rohit Sharma, Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja, according to BCCI sources.

The tough stand by the Board came in the wake of tour manager Ranjib's Biswal's report to BCCI President Shashank Manohar and his meeting with the latter at BCCI headquarters.

Without naming either the errant players or their number, BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty said show cause notices would be sent to these players by Board Secretary N Srinivasan tomorrow at the behest of Manohar.

"The manager of Indian team, Ranjib Biswal, today met the Board President. The Board President and Secretary took information from him regarding the West Indies tour".-Reuters.

Pagination

LIMIT and OFFSET SQL Pagination

Both MySQL and PostgreSQL support a really cool feature called OFFSET that is usually used with a LIMIT clause.

The LIMIT clause is used to limit the number of results returned in a SQL statement. So if you have 1000 rows in a table, but only want to return the first 10, you would do something like this:

SELECT column FROM table
LIMIT 10

This is similar to the TOP clause on Microsoft SQL Server. However the LIMIT clause always goes at the end of the query on MySQL, and PostgreSQL.

Now suppose you wanted to show results 11-20. With the OFFSET keyword its just as easy, the following query will do:

SELECT column FROM table
LIMIT 10 OFFSET 10

This makes it easy to code multi page results or pagination with SQL. Often the approach used is to SELECT all the records, and then filter through them on the application server tier, rather than directly on the database. As you would imagine doing this on the database yields much better performance.

I have known that PostgreSQL supports the OFFSET keyword for quite some time, and for some reason I always thought it was not supported by MySQL. Well it turns out that it is supported now.
